An apology

Posted by Mark Grady on Feb 14, 2013 in Uncategorized | 0 comments
There’s been a bit of a hiatus in updates on my blog. This is because some of the posts went missing and I’ve been trying to figure out what happened, see if I could recover the data and carry on. As part of all that work I came to realise  that not only could I not recover the missing posts but also that my hosting platform was preventing me from updating my web server and PHP versions, and ultimately my blog tool, which not only contributed to the loss but would also stop me from putting any preventative measures in place in the future. So I’ve spent the last few weeks...

Think local, pay global

Think local, pay global
Believe it or not, RIM (makers of the BlackBerry handsets) are behind the recent “Wake up” flash mobs at Apple stores in Australia. It’s a surprising move form a normally conservative brand, some would even go as far as to call it “bold” (geddit? BlackBerry “bold” – BlackBerry Bold. Please yourselves). RIM admits it is responsible for the anti-Apple ‘Wake Up’ campaign in Australia t.co/sw2y3Qy8 by@jonrussell   There have been apparent demonstrations outside and inside Apple stores in Australia with participants holding up...

LinkedIn updates app, finally launches on iPad
I’ve been a LinkedIn user since just after it launched and have found it invaluable in doing business and staying in touch with ex-colleagues and suppliers, so when they launched a mobile app a a year or so ago I jumped at the chance to have all my contact info at my finger tips. It’s a pretty useful and well thought through interface and all the main features you’d want on the go are there. That said I’ve had a bug-bear about the app for about a year now – why was there no iPad version? It’s not that difficult to adapt an app from an iPhone app to an iPad...

When your Google Drive docs are not your Google Drive docs

When your Google Drive docs are not your Google Drive docs
Whilst services like Dropbox and Microsoft’s Skydrive make it really clear that you own your original material and they have no rights to it Google does it’s usual trick and doesn’t clearly define where its assumed rights to your gear stops. Who owns your files on Google Drive? cnet.co/Ibo0bF   I pondered this question yesterday (Google finally coming to the cloud storage party) and speculated that Adwords may get to know you better but it seems the wording of the copyright section of the agreement goes further than this: “When you upload or otherwise...

Mac owners can infect PCs with malware

Mac owners can infect PCs with malware
Sophos have discovered that as many as 1 in 5 Macs could act as “patient zero” in the spread of malware on PCs, whilst as few as 1 in 36 of them actually are infected with similar issues. A study from Sophos found that 1 in 5 Macs has malware - on.mash.to/JXLVsa   It’s not an entirely surprising turn of events – OSX is, after all, a *nix operating system and is capable of storing a wide variety of files without necessarily being able to execute them. What is more surprising is that Macs now seem to be able to spread unwanted nfections. Sophos are calling for...

Google Drive live

Google Drive live
It didn’t take long once the leak had happened for someone to translate and broadcast the news that Google Drive was indeed ready to go live. Pretty soon everyone who’s anyone in Internet circles were banging away on the suspected URLs for the product and there it was in all its glory. Google Drive is a 5GB offering aimed at business applications rather than for personal use, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the neterati will be using it for both. It comes with a desktop integration app allowing you to drag and drop files without opening a web browser – the crew at...

Google finally coming to the cloud storage party
Google’s cloud storage offering has been rumoured, hinted at, confirmed and speculated over for much of the pasty year but it seems it’s taken Microsoft to offer desktop integration of Sky Drive to prompt Google into actually launching their service. Reuters: Google Drive to offer up to 100GB of storage, Tuesday launch teased t.co/uNOHyIuD   Sources have been reporting that we could see GoogleDrive finally make it to the real world and that users could be able to access up to 100GB of online storage. Users will start off with access to a modest 5GB of space, un-named...

Microsoft wants Dropbox’s lunch

Microsoft wants Dropbox’s lunch
Dropbox has some real competition from Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud storage now with integration into Windows and OSX Lion, but think of the little guys – companies like Gladinet who develop tools to mount cloud storage as local drives just lost a string to their bow. Microsoft Takes On Dropbox With SkyDrive For Windows, Mac and iOS t.co/RPs81cbh by @fredericl   That said Microsoft are being mealy-mouthed with the storage they’re making available to new sign-ups, dropping the storage they’re giving away for free from 25GB to just 7GB. Dropbox aren’t taking...
